Can someone clear up for me...

Postby beth on Wed Oct 22, 2008 8:39 pm

Just have a question that I'm hoping someone out there can clear up for me...

Does the NANBF use the same judges for every competition, all year round? I've been told that was the case, but wanted to confirm it.

You might want to ask this in the judges forum, but I have seen different judges at each show. Alot of them are the same, but one may not be able to make it so someone else stands in.

In 4 years of competing, I have never had the same judges panel, familiar faces, but never the exact same crew. There is a strand of judging posts you may want to check out~ :)

Judges

Postby NebraskaBarnes on Fri Oct 24, 2008 1:38 am

Yup, same thing here. Lots of the same, familiar faces, but never the same ones getting together at another show, always mixed up with others. There are going to be some new faces pretty soon too! I am a couple of other are test judging now and I hope do a good enough job to become a full judge and hit some upcoming shows.
Good luck to everyone!

Great question

Beth, super question.

Most of your shows are regional. As a judge of over 25 shows, I can honestly say variety is the top concern. Our promoters and president are careful to select judges with diverse backgrounds. Some have a competitive bb background, like myself, others, figure, and still others, BA's and MA's, BS's and MS's in exercise related fields. You will see familiar faces at regional shows. Several times promoters of other shows will judge for other promoters. I personally hit the midwest pretty hard.

Our president, Fred R., will often suggest judges to local promoters. I know peronally, how I judge is as important as knowing what to judge and I'm very glad Im invited back to each show due to my past performance.

As a judge, viewing a show from the right, left, or center stage makes a huge difference. Be sure once the show is over, to approach the panel and ask any questions you have. At the NANBF, our athletes come first and that always starts with building relationships.

Same judges?

Postby jarnold on Wed Nov 26, 2008 10:09 pm

If you call Becky and I the same judges. But actually we have not had the exact same mix at any of our contest that I can remember this or any year and I was at about all the contests judging except the Bluffs and the Golds. Most all the promoters have their locals that may do the contest a few years in a row but we do try to mix it up every year. We may have a judge take a year off so they do not see the same persons year in and year out. Obviously we understand the idea that competitors feel they get a better unbiased score if they see new faces there and we can agree to some extent. I can tell you that I have judged a few people up to 10 times this year with and gave them from 1st place scores to completely out of the top 5.

Go read my Sticky in Bias judges myths under "Judging" in the Index.
